it is not okay to kill long-time beloved characters for dramatic effect, due to contract issues, or simply because you tired of them, even if in doing so they become heros, ascend to a higher plane of being, or you get to see their sexy wives in long white dresses. it is not an acceptable move. try instead, transferring them to far-off hospitals, working out Michael Shanks contract sooner than season 7, not killing Wash, etc…..

(why is it that, of the three shows I’m especially thinking of, the one I’m most ashamed to admit I watch is by far the least nerdy….)
but I’ve been drinking hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps and watching 90s teen movies with Melissa. so I guess I have to call today overall a win.

1 - day until Meg comes home
13 - days until my youngest sister turns 16
15 - days until I leave for North Carolina
six things I will not miss about college:
- dorm rooms and sketchy roommates
- people puking in front of my door every weekend
- days where I had to write 3+ papers in 24 hours (or less)
- dining hall food
- running into everyone I have drama with, all the time, because I live on a tiny campus
- running up massive debt for facilities and programs which I will never reap the benefits of because the administration are asshats
disclaimer: what I am about to say is in no way an attack on certain lovely people who received awards today at Commencement (which would include me as well). it is more a reflection on seventeen years of academic awards ceremonies and certain trends of which I am becoming more and more aware.
three things which our education system rewards that make Kate uncomfortable:
competition
neuroticism
an over-emphasis on the role of leadership and service in academic achievement
disclaimer part two: while leadership and community service are important things, and certainly commendable, the fact that they are made a requisite of so many academic awards bothers me. for one, it privileges extroverts. for another, the number of leadership awards and the emphasis on leadership often seems to outweigh emphasis on academic scholarship. it also means that, in a setting like a high school or college, only leadership of school-recognized organizations is considered. similarly, what counts as service is limited to structured or traditionally recognized types of community service.
