It's an Ancient Russian Proverb

I’m going to try saying some crazy things to you, and you listen crazily—how about it? - Zuangzi

I am a human being.

I am not your Halloween costume.

I am not your party theme.

I am not your mascot.

I am not your costume.

Are you FUCKING kidding me? I’m all up for equality and respect of other cultures and people but this is fucking ridiculous. Understand the fact that not everything is an attack. Not everything is aimed to disrespect or hurt someone. It’s a fucking costume on Halloween or a party or for FUN.

The people in this picture are ALL white, dressed up as the cultures/people they’re telling you not to dress up as.

No, no one is kidding, it’s not just a costume, it’s not just for fun, etc. Read up on this.

P.S. How do you know they’re white? It’s too bad we don’t have a source for this photo (I checked at the OP and there isn’t one, which is disappointing), but plenty of Asian-Americans, Native Americans, Latin@ people and others may “look white” to you (especially from a small photo like this) and still identify with a different culture or ethnicity that they don’t appreciate being turned into a mascot or costume. I agree that if they are white, the costumed protest is hypocritically problematic, but with the first-person messages, I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt, especially since I know a good number of people who identify as Native American or another ethnicity but get read as “white” - America is a big old melting pot, after all. I can’t really tell what the context is here, unfortunately for everyone involved, so I’m going to go with the people in the photo’s expressed self-definition and not my judgment or yours.

While I’m definitely willing to admit it’s a thornier issue, I do feel like I should point out: Victorians, hippies, 70s disco-goers, 80s fashion divas, and the like as popular halloween costumes as well. I’m willing to see some valid points on both sides myself….
